Clean Your Room

Note: This game can be used as either a Passing Game or a Shooting Game.

I've seen this game also called "Hot Potato", but think the "Clean Your Room" storyline works better.

Divide your players into two teams. Use cones and discs to set up a playing area with two halves, with one team on each side, each player starting with their own ball (throw in extras as well if you have them). The overall play area should be about 20 x 30 yards or so depending upon age.

Start by asking if the players' parents at home like for them to help keep their rooms clean (most will say "yes"). Then explain that they should pretend that their half of the field is their "room" and that we want to keep it really clean. To keep it clean, they have to keep all the balls out of their room by kicking them into the other team's room, "messing it up!"

Play the game for a period of time (5 minutes or so), two to three times. Encourage the flow by calling out "this room is really messy", "this room is looking really clean", etc. The game ends at the end of your allotted time period (a one minute warning usually leads to a fun mad rush). Declare a winner if you like (I usually get by with a "too close to call").

While the game is being played, stress proper technique depending upon which skill you are working on (passing or shooting).
