Juggling

I think we all know what this one is, as it is probably the most classic way to practice ball control out there. The idea obviously is to juggle the ball in the air with different parts of the body, without letting it touch the ground.

With new players, I start with having the kids hold the ball in their hands, drop it and bounce it on their knee, and catch it. I think this is the simplest way to introduce what juggling is. Once they get the hang of it, have them try bouncing it twice on their knee before catching it. Then have them try to drop it, kick it with the top of their foot, and then catch it.

As your players get the idea, play simply advances. Kids will no longer need to catch the ball between juggles, and can start to juggle as many times as they can. Challenge them to use all body parts (feet, knees, chest, head, and even shoulders). Have them count their juggles and keep track of "personal bests". Encourage them to see if they can beat that count. Or give them a set cycle (foot, knee, foot, head, for example) and see if they can juggle in that pattern.

Juggling is one of the best way to master control of the ball, and should be a part of every practice.
